Story

This coffee comes to us from Mubuku Washing Station, a 20-acre plot located along the banks of the Mubuku River in the Kasese District. The river starts at the Upper Rwenzori Mountains and flows all the way to Lake George, winding through fertile farmland on the east-facing slopes of the Rwenzori Mountain Range.

Mubuku Washing Station brings together coffee grown by over 4,300 farmers across different communities and processed by UGACOF processing company. UGACOF was founded in 1994 with the focus of sustainability and traceability throughout major coffee-producing regions of Uganda. This coffee is part of a specialty partnership with UGACOF aimed at developing high-quality flavor profiles of Ugandan coffee using intentionally designed experimental processing methods.

This lot is composed entirely of SL14, a varietal closely associated with the unique biodiversity of places like Uganda and Kenya. Upon arrival, coffee cherries are meticulously hand-sorted by trained staff before being placed in sealed tanks to undergo the anaerobic fermentation process for the next 40 hours. The drier, hotter climate surrounding Mubuku Washing Station provides the ideal environment to experiment with anaerobic natural processing.
